Tiny Sunbirds Far Away
Tiny Sunbirds Far Away by Christie Watson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My favourite read this year. Put it on your ‘to read’ list now.

It’s a wonderful coming of age story of Blessing a 12/13 year old girl, who’s whole life is tipped upside down when her Mother returns home to find her husband on top of another woman. They move out of their gated community apartment in the city to live with her maternal grandparents.

The story is told from Blessing’s perspective and is warm, naive and touching whilst she experiences injustice, violence and tragedy. An amazing voice which tells us so much about the ordinary village people of Nigeria, living alongside the corruption of government and oil companies.

I learnt so much from this book and it will stay with me for a long time.
