Black Sea Twilight, Dominica Radulescu, Book Group, Reading Group, Book ReviewHard to believe that we are so far through the year that we are gearing up for the October read. As the children go back to school, and you start to feel that nip in the air, I always feel comforted that Autumn almost gives you permission to indulge in cosy indoor pursuits of the reading kind.

So why not devote a little ‘you time’ in October and join in with the Love A Book reading group. I have 10 copies of a brilliant sounding book up for grabs, courtesy of the wonderful publisher Transworld. I believe the best bit about reading a book is sharing and discussing what we did and didn’t like about the story and characters, so we’ll have a round up at the end of the month to see what everyone thought.

Here’s a little about the book:
1980s Romania: As the sun sets on the magical shore of the Black Sea and casts its last rays across the water, all Nora Teodoru can think about is pursuing her dream of becoming an accomplished artist – and of her love for Gigi, her childhood boyfriend from the Turkish part of town. But storm clouds are gathering as life under Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu becomes increasingly unbearable. His secret police are circling, never far from the young couple’s doors. Nora and Gigi make plans to escape to Turkey, but nothing can prepare them for the events that follow. Five years later, the Romanian revolution is over, and Nora is on her own in Paris trying to make it as an artist. But then Gigi unexpectedly reappears in her life – and they are faced with shocking revelations about each other. Nora realizes her life can never be the same . . .

About the Author

Domnica Radulescu won her country’s National Prize for Short Story Writing when she was just 17 but fled the country soon after to escape the Communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. She is now a Full Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Chair of the Women’s Studies Program at Washington and Lee University.

My favourite thing about autumn is getting wrapped up in a big chunky jumper when you start to feel the first chill in the air. I also love the smell in the early morning when it's fresh and crisp.

My favourite thing about Autumn is we start having log fires in the evenings at weekend. Nothing better than being cosy with woodsmoke, a glass of wine and…erm…the telly!

Now Summer is over , I really must get back into the reading group – haven't been involved since the first one. Apologies for that and hope I'll be a more regular reader and contributor.

my most favourite thing about autumn is how all the leaves start to turn into beautiful a orange colour and then they fall of the trees into big piles so when you walk on then they make a loud crunchy noise. I also love that i can wear comfy warm cardigans with tights and boots and a wooly hat and start getting excited for winter! :)

  4. Autumn ahhh – colours! the colours of the changing leaves, the colour of the light as it changes when it dips lower into the sky and changes shadows, the different colours to the food we eat and the different colours/textures of the clothes we wear. Yes, colours are my favourite thing about autumn :)

  5. The beautiful colour changes to the trees .. Very gorgeous.

I love the slight chill in the air at autumn, and I actually like the darker nights creeping slowly in – time to get cosy inside & light lovely scented candles!! Would love to win this book, it's not my usual style of book but I'm trying to read a lot of new things!! Have tweeted link as well (@NicsNotebook) xx

The cool nights and beautiful sunny days. I miss the smell of burning leaves from my childhood when we would rake the leaves into large piles and have a bonfire.

  8. Barbara says:

Misty mornings, the smell of bonfires, conkers (I love how shiny the seeds are when they first come out of the seedpod), dew on spider’s webs. Tweet done.

  9. Allan says:

For me it has to be that sense of new beginnings- starting new things after the relaxation of the summer break. At junior school I used to love getting all the brand new exercise books at the beginning of the autumn term and putting the date on the first page and feeling the anticipation of the year ahead. (I'm sure that particular feeling didn't last too long as the reality of the work that would need to be done dawned on me…..)

  10. Favourite thing about autumn? Seeing dew on cobwebs in the morning – as the morning is late enough for me to actually see iyswim ;)
